International studies indicate that the top 10 per
cent of our Year 8 students now perform at about the same level in mathematics as the top 50 per cent of students in Singapore, Korea and Chinese Taipei.
Data from the Scaffolding Numeracy in the Middle Years (SNMY) project, the second of the two studies mentioned above, found that approximately 70 per cent of Year 5 and 35 per
cent of Year 8 students did not have access to multiplicative thinking.
