Especially based on the point that there wasn't a whole lot of fact to go off of besides just a few known outcomes of
certain particular battles to begin with.

The
battle system goes to the extent that only
certain attacks are effective against
particular enemies, this is demostrated through the Stats window which tells the status of the current enemy engaged.
One late - game piece, in
particular, reminded me so much of the final
battle theme of Xenogears that I was
certain that Raine had been looking at my Secret Journal of Soundtrack Wishes for inspiration.
I also found their addition of barriers to be interesting as
certain enemies required a
particular member of the squad to
battle them for a small amount of time.
Certain moves and mechanics are only available in a
particular Phase Shift, and the shifts only change when one of the fighters hits a particularly powerful move on their opponent (this can admittedly lead to some
battles feeling fragmented when they switch too frequently, but improvising between two play styles is a unique touch).
