The raw potato and skins also
contain chaconine, which is toxic and can cause irritation to the digestive tract, nervous system symptoms (tremors), and kidney function disorders.
Potatoes contain glycoalkaloids, toxic compounds, of which the most prevalent are solanine and
chaconine.
Potatoes naturally produce solanine and
chaconine, a related glycoalkaloid, as a defense mechanism against insects, disease and predators (humans included).
These toxic steroidal alkaloids, which primarily consist of alpha - solanine and alpha -
chaconine, are thought to protect the crop against pests and diseases induced by fungi and insects (Korpan et al., 2004).
Potato stems, branches, leaves and fruits are toxic, containing alkaloids such as arsenic,
chaconine and solanine.
Symptoms may vary depending on how much solanine and
chaconine was in the potatoes or potato skins your dog ate, and the size and health of your dog.
Even in small amounts, your dog can have symptoms similar to food poisoning due to the solanine and
chaconine.
