chalk paint do that before.

chalk paint you do tend to get the brush strokes.

I sanded the whole body a bit, which I normally don't do, because I was going to be painting the whole thing with the SW latex paint, and it doesn't adhere to varnished surfaces like
chalk paint does.

I'm not sure I understand your question Maria... chalk paint doesn't require prep (unless your piece is really dirty or you want to remove gouges by sanding).
The chalk paint did work but it took several coats to really get good coverage.

Chalk paint doesn't require any sanding or priming which is why it was a perfect choice for this piano makeover.
Keep in mind that
chalk paint does show brush strokes, which is part of it's charm, but that also means that you want to keep your brush strokes going in the same direction.
Chalk paint does have a more textured feel when it dries, but with a light sanding it smooths out really well.
I have heard people complain that chalk paint doesn't adhere well to Pottery Barn furniture.

chalk paint I always wax it because the finish is gorgeous and poly just
does not have the same beautiful, soft finish.

chalk paint, AS wax and then aging with dark wax.
