Tip: using cardstock becomes a little messy... if you are using chalk paint you can always sand down the sloppy edges and then finish it off with a dry brush technique in the old white to fade some of the those not so nice spots.
Also, keep in mind that if you pick up a piece you'd like to paint using this technique, and it's already stained or painted, you can skip this step entirely and simply apply a top coat of chalk paint.

Not only does chalk paint give a project vintage look right off the bat, antiquing and distressing techniques come out much better on a chalk paint finish hands down.

You can do this with most any brand of chalk paint, it's really the technique that will make it look weathered, and the colors that will make it appears as a certain type of weathered wood.

So... I started with white chalk paint, then proceeded with your technique.
Chalk Paint ™ by Annie Sloan goes on just like any other paint, however - the application ability is amazing in that using different techniques and color combinations - the end effect can vary drastically!
I'm super curious about trying chalk paint, but still swear by the wax technique today.
