As all
working moms know, having just a few hours in the day to spend with your kid (and very little energy) can be quite a
challenge.
Jenn in Toronto is
working her way through our Rookie
Mom Challenges with her son Sebastian and sent us this wonderful week of fun
as her response to
Challenge # 17 (become the cruise director).
Especially considering,
as others have explained, the
challenges faced by
working moms, you should be happy that a large number of them continue to nurse while they
work, which is what the data indicate.
As a
Working Mom there many
challenges that can pop - up with the people we
work with because of the lifestyle we have chosen.
The
challenges of those first weeks
as a
working mom are impossible to forget.
As an exclusively - pumping
mom, carrying a breast pump was a part of my daily life, but the transition back to
work and carrying so many bags and pump accessories brought about new
challenges.
A cold or an ear infection can wreak havoc on sleeping patterns,
as can emotional
challenges such
as Mom returning to
work or getting used to a new babysitter.
I have been blessed to experience many different situations
as a
mom -
working, staying home,
working while staying at home - and let me tell you they all have their many unique
challenges.
And ever since then I've passionate about helping
moms overcome their breastfeeding
challenges and I've been
working in public health for the past nine years
as a lactation consultant and a dietitian.

As mentioned above, breastfeeding is hard
work and combined with the other
challenges of motherhood, can be exhausting for
mom.
My little man, Brooks, just turned 4 months old and while I have been spending the past 17 weeks getting used to my new role
as a
mom, I've also been hard at
work crossing items from the Rookie
Moms 52 Week
Challenge off my list!
Life
as a
working new
mom comes with
challenges.
I also like to think of Durga
as a patron goddess for overscheduled
working moms, inspiring them to deal with the
challenges of juggling a job, a family, and countless daily emergencies.
I was feeling pretty excited to share this months Conversation Pieces Blogger
Challenge, I think mostly because the pieces really speak to me
as a
mom (yet they
work for anyone.)
If his mentally
challenged, beer - swilling father Ansel (Thomas Haden Church), who
works as a grease monkey at Bob's Muffler Shop, and his sluttish stepmom Sharla, a former stripper who
works in a pizza parlor, will help, they can knock off Chris's drunken
mom (and Ansel's ex-wife), pay off the debt, split the profits, and have enough dough left over to improve their lifestyle — maybe get out of the trailer and move up in the world, to a tract house with aluminum siding near a 7 - Eleven.
A son and grandson of educators, I grew up witnessing my
mom's joys and
challenges as a teacher: the foot - high piles of student
work to grade, the exasperated dinner - table conversations about distressing new state legislation, the weekend trips to her classroom to keep up with the demands of the job.
Today I talk about the
challenges traveling for
work as a breadwinning
mom, and ask that we leave the guilt behind.
Despite these
challenges, one of the most precious gifts we've gained along the way is the pleasure of seeing our daughters build a friendship of their own
as they witnessed their
moms joyfully collaborating in passionate
work.
