A functional resume is typically used
by job seekers who are
changing careers, who have gaps in their employment history, or who have limited work experience.
Job seekers with perfect backgrounds (no gaps, career
changes, or the like) and managers and professionals who are often tapped
by executive recruiters should avoid this format.
Another career
change resume came across my desk today, and the
job seeker used a functional format... as usual.Career changers seem to be lured in
by the potential benefits of a functional resume, which focuses on relevant skills and downplays employment history.

Sorting — now that's an action that many, I fear, are short -
changing;
by sorting through findings, before taking next step actions,
job seekers can refine their search and their «focus» — which is another action step you so wisely advise!

Given the
changing nature of employment in today's economy, a statement of objective at the outset of a resume is too restrictive for most
job seekers and can be replaced
by a «Profile» or «Summary of Qualifications» detailing the nature of the applicant's background and scope of experience.
The first is used
by job seekers with solid years of professional experience, while the second is
by those who are
changing careers or have been terminated at least once.
