Climate
change (research done by Francis Chiew, University of Melbourne) was seen as likely to reduce
flow by 5 % (1100GL per annum)
in the next 20 years, with the possibility (worst foreseeable) of
causing a reduction of 20 % (4400GL per annum)
in the same period.
Primarily this is going to impact as a result of shading
causing differing heating / cooling of the ground under / around the enclosure, resulting
in changes in the temperature and
flow rate of rising air up through the enclosure.

The air circulation
changes ensure that over time the energy radiated to space matches the energy received from the sun despite disruptions
in the
flow caused by the effects of the ocean cycles or
changes in the composition of the air.
Climate
change is
caused by heat trapped by greenhouse gases that produce an energy imbalance between the energy
flowing in and out of the upper atmosphere.
The
changes in the rate of outgoing energy
flow caused by
changes in solar surface turbulence may be small but they appear to be enough to affect the air circulation systems and thereby influence the overall global energy budget disproportionately to the tiny variations
in solar power intensity.
So, if you «try» to
change the temperature structure of the atmosphere by
changing the heat
flows between the surface and atmosphere, the atmosphere just responds by altering the convection to cancel out most of this
change and you end up with basically the same temperature structure you started with (modulo the issues involving the moist adiabatic lapse rate... i.e., the fact that the adiabatic lapse rate
changes some with heating, which genuinely does
cause a
change in the temperature structure and leads to the lapse rate feedback, a negative feedback already included
in all of the climate models).
However, there are fears that, due to factors like worsening wildfires or carbon dioxide emissions from Arctic permafrost, this could
change in the future,
causing even more global warming gases to
flow from the land to the atmosphere.
Ho added that the enhanced intensification of tropical cyclones over East Asian coastal seas
caused by
changes in sea surface temperature and wind
flows mean that «an individual tropical cyclone could strike East Asia, including the Philippines, with a record - breaking power, for example Haiyan, even though landfall intensity
in south - east Asia has not notably
changed on average
in recent years because of the shifted genesis location; note that Haiyan formed over the eastern Philippine Sea far from land.»
