I have worked in the legal sector for almost three decades and, during this time, have witnessed wholesale
change in the way lawyers operate and interact with clients.
I am not talking about branding as in lawyers need better fonts (although that wouldn't hurt), I'm talking about a strategic
change in the way lawyers see themselves and are seen by the public.

The New York City Bar Association and the State Bar of California have recently issued comprehensive reports that call for fundamental
changes in the way lawyers are taught to practice law both in and after law school.

changing, and we talk about that a lot, but really it's the individual
lawyers thinking outside the box, pushing the boundaries of what we've been taught
in the traditional model, and just getting out there and delivering legal services

ways that's really forming what we call this future of law practice.
The report suggests that we find new models for legal education, that we reflect on our practice
in order to innovate, and that
lawyers take an integrated, multidisciplinary approach to problem - solving — what would it mean to make these
changes in a mindful
way?

When I later became the State Bar president, I used my soapbox megaphone to help
lawyers better understand the rapid
changes occurring
in the legal environment and to give them
ways, including tech, to retool their practices to thrive again.
But
change is high: consumers are demanding more efficient, transparent and affordable legal services, and
lawyers are looking for cutting - edge
ways to compete
in an oversaturated market.
It'll be interesting to see not only how many
lawyers actually participate but if it does,
in any
way,
change public perception.
