Journalists in many developing countries have special and often unique challenges when trying to report on fast breaking climate
change and
science stories generally.

I conjecture that three
changes in the way in which the climate problem is presented by the experts to the general public would make the conversation go better: acknowledge that climate constraints are unwelcome (thereby establishing empathy with general audiences, as a doctor does when conveying bad news), present the
science as unfinished (thereby taking away the surprise factor that accompanies every new wrinkle — cf. the cosmic ray
stories of a couple of weeks ago), and admit that no solution is wonderful (something hard for much of our community, which loves some strategy and hates at least one of the others).
I think that
story is example of the the ways in which climate
change attribution can be overstretched in ways that I believe undermine
science, misdirect resources and weaken the social support for addressing climate
change.
Another way of saying it: Although we are seeing less outright false balance in climate coverage than a decade or two ago, bias against mainstream
science understanding persists in the relatively subtle form of selective reporting of eyebrow - raising claims, which strengthen the impression that scientists are always
changing their
story, in which case, shrug.
I think Spencer is helpful by suggesting there is a much bigger
story happening in the world of
science, knowledge and cultural authority of which the climate
change incidents of this moment are just part.
Anyone who follows climate
science, solutions, and politics knows that climate
change is in the process of emerging as the
story of the century — and that's only if every major country pulls together to rapidly transform the global economy to avoid catastrophe.
