The Arctic climate affects the world:
Changes in sea ice affect ocean circulation, which, in turn, affects atmospheric circulation that then impacts the globe, said Bruce Forbes, a geographer at the Arctic Center at the University of Lapland in Finland, who was not involved in the study.

Studying surging glaciers could also offer insights into grander - scale
ice flows with global consequences: the movements of the
ice sheets
in Antarctica and Greenland, which can
change abruptly, altering the
ice discharges that
affect sea level.
Polar bears, the poster - child for climate
change, are among the animals most
affected by the seasonal and year - to - year
changes in Arctic
sea ice, because they rely on this surface for essential activities such as hunting, traveling and breeding.
Understanding what's causing the
changes in the
ice shelves «puts us a little bit closer to knowing what's going to happen to the grounded
ice, which is what will ultimately
affect sea - level rise,» Fricker said.
«Retreating
sea ice linked to

In general, Antarctic
sea ice is much more variable than the Arctic, and scientists are still grappling with how climate
change and various natural climate cycles might be interacting to
affect sea ice levels there.
The researchers warn, however, that the future evolution of the AMO remains uncertain, with many factors potentially
affecting how it interacts with atmospheric circulation patterns, such as Arctic
sea ice loss,
changes in solar radiation, volcanic eruptions and concentrations of greenhouse gases
in the atmosphere.
It could be a
change in algae or other food for them, or it could be that
sea ice provides shelter from predators, or
affects the currents
in some way.
Furthermore, we must understand how
changes in sea ice cover
affect the feeding ecology of humpback whales and their competitors
in the short - term and the dynamics of krill populations over the longer term, particularly given the increasing pressure from commercial krill harvests [36].
This kind of significant
change could increase the rate of warming already
in progress,
affect further
sea ice loss
in the Arctic and alter shipping access to the Arctic Ocean.
While it is often occurring
in remote regions, ongoing
change with the cryosphere has impacts on people all around the world:
sea level rise
affects coastlines globally, billions of people rely on water from snowpack, and the diminishing
sea ice that covers the Arctic Ocean plays a significant role
in Earth's climate and weather patterns.
Such research is now becoming urgent as regional climate
change is already impacting upon areas of West Antarctica and the Antarctic Peninsula [30] and colonies
in this region may already be
affected by the consequent loss of
sea ice [8].
This raises the possibility that
changes in sea level can profoundly
affect the S.Hem
ice — wasting of N.Hem
ice sheets can raise
sea level, «unpin» and destabilize the S.Hem
ice, helping make the
changes global.
Mike's work, like that of previous award winners, is diverse, and includes pioneering and highly cited work
in time series analysis (an elegant use of Thomson's multitaper spectral analysis approach to detect spatiotemporal oscillations
in the climate record and methods for smoothing temporal data), decadal climate variability (the term «Atlantic Multidecadal Oscillation» or «AMO» was coined by Mike
in an interview with Science's Richard Kerr about a paper he had published with Tom Delworth of GFDL showing evidence
in both climate model simulations and observational data for a 50 - 70 year oscillation
in the climate system; significantly Mike also published work with Kerry Emanuel
in 2006 showing that the AMO concept has been overstated as regards its role
in 20th century tropical Atlantic SST
changes, a finding recently reaffirmed by a study published
in Nature),
in showing how
changes in radiative forcing from volcanoes can
affect ENSO,
in examining the role of solar variations
in explaining the pattern of the Medieval Climate Anomaly and Little
Ice Age, the relationship between the climate
changes of past centuries and phenomena such as Atlantic tropical cyclones and global
sea level, and even a bit of work
in atmospheric chemistry (an analysis of beryllium - 7 measurements).
Reductions
in sea ice and other
changes may
affect the amount of Carbon Dioxide absorbed by the Arctic Ocean, while thawing permafrost is expected to increase emissions of methane.
How would this
change in currents
affect the amount of heat
in the surface layer that is transported into the Arctic and contributes to melting the Arctic
Sea Ice?
The magnitude and spatial distribution of the high - latitude climate
changes can be strongly
affected by
sea ice characteristics, but evaluation of
sea ice in models is hampered by insufficient observations of some key variables (e.g.,
ice thickness)(see Section 4.4).
Climate - deniers use this to try to knock down evidence of how climate
change will
affect polar bears and
sea ice, since they believe if they can disprove one tiny aspect of climate
change, it will result
in a domino effect.

The study, published
in the journal Nature Geosciences, suggests that the
change of phase of the Interdecadal Pacific Oscillation (IPO) from positive to negative, or vice versa, could initiate chain reaction of climate impact that may
affect the
sea ice formation
in the Antarctic region.
Changes in the Arctic led by

The cryosphere derives its importance to the climate system from a variety of effects, including its high reflectivity (albedo) for solar radiation, its low thermal conductivity, its large thermal inertia, its potential for
affecting ocean circulation (through exchange of freshwater and heat) and atmospheric circulation (through topographic
changes), its large potential for
affecting sea level (through growth and melt of land
ice), and its potential for
affecting greenhouse gases (through
changes in permafrost)(Chapter 4).
Both studies make an «important contribution» to our understanding of how climate
change is likely to
affect Arctic
sea ice, says Dr Amber Leeson, a lecturer
in glaciology and environmental data science from the University of Lancaster, who was not involved
in the research.
Our findings suggest that complex
changes in sea ice and prey availability will interact to
affect Svalbard polar bear feeding patterns and associated nutrition.
The loss of
sea ice changes ecosystems, opening the door to invasive species, and alters habitat and plankton blooms,
affecting Alaska's commercial fishing industry, which leads the United States
in the value of its catch.
Ocean acidification, rising ocean temperatures, declining
sea ice, and other environmental
changes interact to
affect the location and abundance of marine fish, including those that are commercially important, those used as food by other species, and those used for subsistence.16, 17,18,122,19,20,21 These
changes have allowed some near - surface fish species such as salmon to expand their ranges northward along the Alaskan coast.124, 125,126
In addition, non-native species are invading Alaskan waters more rapidly, primarily through ships releasing ballast waters and bringing southerly species to Alaska.5, 127 These species introductions could
affect marine ecosystems, including the feeding relationships of fish important to commercial and subsistence fisheries.
Coastal stability
in polar regions is
affected by factors common to all areas (exposure, relative
sea - level
change, climate and lithology), and by factors specific to the high latitudes (low temperatures, ground
ice and
sea ice).
The energy system is both a source of emissions that lead to global warming and it can also be directly
affected by climate
change: through
changes in our energy consumption patterns, potential shutdowns of offshore oil and gas production,
changing ice and snow conditions
in the oil production regions of Alaska,
changing sea ice conditions
in the Arctic Ocean and the implications for shipping routes, and impacts of
sea - level rise on coasts, where so much of our energy facility infrastructure is located.

Back then, Palin was the governor of a state where «coastal erosion, thawing permafrost, retreating
sea ice, record forest fires, and other
changes are
affecting, and will continue to
affect, the lifestyles and livelihoods of Alaskans,» as she wrote (
in a 2007 administrative order creating the state's Climate
Change Sub-Cabinet).
It also projected that shorter and warmer winters would
affect sea ice cover, resulting
in changes to animal behaviour and Inuit access to food sources.
It was only after the warming
in the NH and the associated
changes to the ocean from the
ice water melt
affected the
sea levels that the SH would have experience warming.
Temperature and
sea ice changes in the Arctic can
affect wildlife and open up new areas for oil drilling and shipping — both industries that can have heavy climate impacts.
UW Today talks with Qinghua Ding and Axel Schweiger about a new study published
in Nature Climate
Change of how natural variability
affects sea ice loss
in the Arctic.
So if you want to test a
change in something like the cloud scheme, that might
affect the solar radiation that reaches the
sea -
ice in summer, you have to do so with a shorter run.
This could very well be related to the low
sea ice extents, as it is well known that
changes in sea temperatures
affect the wind and pressure patterns
in the atmosphere (for example: El Nino and La Nina).
I can only list a few regular «goings on'that I KNOW
affect sea level; I'm certain that there are others:
Change in overall temperature of the oceans (a few millidegrees / mm), plate tectonics, slit from rivers, erosion of seashores, extraction of ground water which ultimately returns to the oceans, marine life and its products building up the ocean floors, melting land
ice, undersea discharges of a variety of «stuff» from literally hundreds of thousands of sources, often at temperatures
in the 1 - 2 thousand degree range, which we are only now beginning to notice, wind carrying dust from the land and dropping it on the ocean.
«Greenland hosts the largest reservoir of freshwater
in the northern hemisphere, and any substantial
changes in the mass of its
ice sheet will
affect global
sea level, ocean circulation and climate,» said Velicogna.
While climate
change does not
affect Earth's tilt, it does have potential implications for many of the other factors that influence winter weather
in the US, including Arctic
sea ice, the polar jet stream, the polar vortex, and El Niño.
The observed effects of cryosphere reduction include modification of river regimes due to enhanced glacial melt, snowmelt advance and enhanced winter base flow; formation of thermokarst terrain and disappearance of surface lakes
in thawing permafrost; decrease
in potential travel days of vehicles over frozen roads
in the Arctic; enhanced potential for glacier hazards and slope instability due to mechanical weakening driven by
ice and permafrost melting; regional ocean freshening;
sea - level rise due to glacier and
ice sheet shrinkage; biotic colonisation and faunal
changes in deglaciated terrain;
changes in freshwater and marine ecosystems
affected by lake -
ice and
sea -
ice reduction;
changes in livelihoods; reduced tourism activities related to skiing,
ice climbing and scenic activities
in cryospheric areas
affected by degradation; and increased ease of ship transportation
in the Arctic.
His research focuses on understanding the interactions of
ice, ocean and climate,
in particular using imaging radar observations from satellites and airplanes to determine how the
ice sheets
in Antarctica, Greenland and Patagonia will respond to climate
change and
affect global
sea level.
Reductions
in winter
sea -
ice will
affect the reproduction, growth and development of fish, krill, and their predators, including seals and seal - dependent polar bears (e.g., Barber and Iacozza, 2004; Box 4.3), leading to further
changes in abundance and distribution of marine species (Chapter 15, Section 15.4.3).
