awards are annoying, the fact is that they won't affect too many customers... but the same is not true for Business Class

Yesterday, while most people's attention was focused on the addition of Premium Economy redemptions
to the Singapore Airlines
award chart (more on that in a separate post), the airline slipped in a
change to the charts in a way that increased the
cost of Premium Cabin Saver
Awards to certain European cities.
The biggest
changes are happening at the properties moving from Category 2
to Category 3 and Category 4
to Category 5 where
award stays will now
cost 10,000 HHonors points more from 30 March.
Until now,
changing or canceling an
award reservation (
to redeposit the miles)
costs $ 90 CAD (close
to $ 70 USD).
Singapore Airlines has announced some significant
changes to the
cost of its
awards and, in an attempt
to soften the blow of the
award chart devaluation, it has also announced that it will no longer levy fuel surcharges on
award bookings.
For example, Delta recently
changed its partner redemption rates so that a one - way business class
award to Europe on Virgin Atlantic, Air France, KLM, or Alitalia
costs 85,000 SkyMiles.
Malaysia Airlines also recently announced
changes to its Enrich program that will significantly increase

award chart isn't published, making it easier for Delta
to change the

award at any time without notice.
A Virgin Atlantic agent confirmed
to me that only transatlantic
award costs are
changing (
to align Virgin and Delta) all other
awards on Delta (e.g inter-USA, USA
to South American etc...) remain at the existing levels.
And the second biggest
change is that
awards originating in the US will no longer
cost more than
awards originating in the UK or Europe — your originating point will therefore affect how you view the
changes to award rates as the tables below should hopefully show.
If anything, thanks
to what's happened with fuel prices, the
cost of flying passengers has decreased since the last major
award chart
changes in 2012.
Once again the savings are anything but spectacular but, if you're about
to book one of these
awards, why not wait until after the
award chart
changes — you can use the miles you save
to offset some of the more heinous increases in the
cost of other
awards.
This is just another reason I'm not surprised they
changed their Star Alliance
award chart, as I'm sure they want
to ensure that booking an
award ticket
to experience this new product
cost a premium regardless of how it is booked.
The
cost to change or cancel an
award flight depends on its cash value.

awards will still be expensive in cash outlay, and will start
costing more miles as well come June (with the ability
to book at lower mileage levels through December, a good and fair move
to give reasonable notice of

award travel, but none of us should be comforted by the addition of more consumer fees: especially in light of the fact that an
award routing
change more than 21 - days out (and even close - in) is
cost - neutral
