The Common Core seems to represent «a
change for the better» when it comes to «higher order
cognitive demand» but the «answer is less clear» when it comes to topics.
This reflects the increasing understanding that in rapidly
changing knowledge economies, critical thinking and problem solving are important parts of the new global skill set, whereas the labor market
demand for routine
cognitive competencies — the kinds of skills that are easy to teach and test — has declined rapidly over recent decades.
However, the proportions of time for topic and
cognitive demand coverage did not precisely match up, so we have made some
changes to the surveys (discussed next).
We think these
changes will make it more likely that teachers can accurately report and can be consistent between logs and year - end surveys, especially when it comes to the proportional coverage across topics and
cognitive demands.
