What is it in our national
character that makes us so attached to this
mystique around two - fistedness and brutishness?
Mystique is one of my favorite X-Men
characters.
X-Men: Apocalypse is a part of a new series of films that began with X-Men: First Class, and a large chunk of First Class focused on
Mystique as a
character.
Mystique's
character arc begins with her looking human for a good portion of the movie and then, over the course of the film, learning to accept herself as a mutant and decides to stay blue until the end.
Unfortunately, Lawrence doesn't register as strongly, which partially has to do with her role's malleable particulars (
Mystique spends a lot of time being other people) and also her status in the storyline — as both the hunter and the hunted, she spends most of her time in motion and doesn't get too many
character moments.
It's the combination of
character development, action and pure emotion that drives the film, where even secondary
characters have motivations; a wonderful moment a lesser film would have cut for time finds the shapeshifting
Mystique (Rebecca Romijn) propositioning Wolverine, at first disguising herself as Wolvie's crush, Jean Grey (Famke Janssen), then purring, «No one has left scars like you.»
Mystique's
character has become even more interesting, as we see her caught between the sweet Raven from First Class, yet on the road to becoming the genocidal terrorist from Singer's movies.
What was so great was the attention to the
character development, Magneto, Nightcrawler and
Mystique really tug at your heart strings while the rest of the cast were also magnificent.
She should have no troubles proving that she is capable of playing more
characters than Katniss Everdeen and
Mystique.
Although the stoic nature of her
character effectively mutes any need for ostentatious displays of emotions, Carano's imposing physical build, looks, and dynamic fighting style does make up for the lack of nuance in her
character, such that it creates that certain
mystique that many quiet - but - deadly action stars like Clint Eastwood benefit from.
And, while the near - naked
Mystique character from past films does not make an appearance in this X-Men adventure, a nude Jackman is seen (obscurely) from the side and rear.
He commands the screen with authority, making a deeply layered
character accessible while maintaining the appropriate amount of
mystique.
As Marvel continues to claw the
character's
mystique away, he's starting to get his wish.
So because Jennifer Lawrence is the breakout Hollywood star,
Mystique, a secondary
character, chews up more and more screen time and suddenly is the leader of the X-Men?
There was a nice moment where
Mystique is disguised as Wolverine, so Hugh Jackman adds the faintest touch of
Mystique sass to the
character, which comes across really well.
What you won't see here is any footage of either Samantha Morton or her replacement, Scarlett Johansson, recording «Samantha,» which suggests either an attempt to preserve the
character's
mystique or a way to avoid confronting the messy politics of recasting.
This film is of a single
character on a singular quest so it does parallel the Bond
mystique.
It's perfect, then, that Mike Leigh «s marvelous Mr. Turner takes an impressionistic approach to exploring Turner's
character, focusing on intimate, revelatory, and often unflattering moments in the late painter's life, stressing truth over historical accuracy while never shattering Turner's
mystique.
While it is incumbent on the audience watching any Indiana Jones film to accept a degree of supernatural power and treasure hunting
mystique, the degree to which credulity is stretched coupled with the loss of
character at the hands of big action scene artificial imagery means the heart of the film is lost.
That dominant theme of respect is a key element to the film and adds a certain
mystique that makes you curious about the back story and past relationships of the
characters.
The filmmaker describes the
character as «vengeful» in the tweet, suggesting that the complicated relationship between Lawrence's
Mystique and James McAvoy's Professor X from First Class will continue in this follow - up.

Rumours that the core cast would be back have been confirmed, with James McAvoy, Michael Fassbender and even Jennifer Lawrence (who didn't seem particularly into X-Men: Apocalypse but chose to come back to complete her
character's story) reprising their roles as Charles Xavier, Magneto and
Mystique.
Meanwhile, Lawrence's version of
Mystique has benefited from a dramatic expansion of the role — what was an easily identified villain in the original trilogy has become a layered, conflicted
character with a real journey.
James McAvoy (Professor X), Jennifer Lawrence (
Mystique), Michael Fassbender (Magneto), Sophie Turner (Jean Grey), Alexandra Shipp (Storm), Tye Sheridan (Cyclops), Nicholas Hoult (Beast), Evan Peters (Quicksilver), and Kodi Smit - McPhee (Nightcrawler) are all back in the 1990s - set story, with Jessica Chastain on - board playing a
character that has yet to be revealed.
Lawrence's
Mystique is really the
character who matters the most in the film and now the rumors of a spin - off with the actress makes more sense than ever.
Yeah I know timelines and
characters were shifted and realigned with Days of Future Past, but
Mystique in this movie felt weird.
The key
characters are the young Xavier and Magneto, Wolverine, and
Mystique.
(I believe it was about how most of Jackson's female
characters seemed to buy into the «
mystique» that Friedan would shortly identify and attack.)
Mystique in a coarse dress - it promises depth in the
characters, their minds and philosophies, but somehow I felt discontent when it ended.
The real - life players in El Paso might not be instantly recognizable, but Groom retains a sense of
mystique about them as he stirs the pot with colorful
