Every since I was a kid and I was watching the classic series and
these character have power over me.

But it is really healthier for the mind to leave behind all the
characters that people
over the centuries
have invented or given
powers to, for which there is little or no foundation.

has been increasingly typecast as either a twitchy weirdo on societal margins or an earnest simpleton, but Bahrani, in a stroke of casting gumption that makes one wonder why he's the first to make the move,
has redirected the actor's distinctly coiled facial features and natural gift for commanding a room toward a
character with genuinely threatening social and economic
power.
The
character has total control
over the molecules of his body, enabling him to alter his form as it suits him, such as allowing his body to become extremely malleable and flexible or change its size, enhance his physical abilities, transform his limbs into weapons, wings, or jets, regenerate from fatal injuries, adapt his body to apparently any disease or hostile environment, as well as give himself virtually any superhuman
power.
This
power doesn't make women any less of a riddle to Tim, who apparently only uses his abilities to get laid, though no
character ever seems to
have a problem with money
over the film's runtime.
In a quick series of exchanges, the entire
character is beautifully sketched out: a geeky brainiac teen who
has powers he can't quite comprehend, suddenly in
over his head.
For
over half the film we watch these
characters work on building something, then in a flash they become superheroes with
powers they haven't even learned to use before they are stereotypically tasked with saving the world.
I love how that's the new phrase for everyone's
over due Oscar — last time someone
had a Brockovich nomination it was Sandra Bullock — none of these people including Julia Roberts should be teaching acting classes but that goes to show you the
power of movie stars — that the Academy doesn't waste its
powers on just
character actors hogging all the glory.
