charming crowd pleaser, an infectiously entertaining coming
of age film that feels primed to attract and retain a loyal eager - to - rewatch
audience.

charming and athletic — it's got to be the only franchise where the target
audiences are teenage boys and women
of the
age of reason.
Thanks in no small part to Pixar, DreamWorks & Illumination holding down the fort across the pond as well as the utterly
charming Aardman Studios on this side
of the Atlantic, animation is now no longer a playground just for kids; true, the target
audience is still primarily child - like in both
age & size but the best and most successful animated features now possess whip - smart humour that's definitely targeted to adults.
Now, almost 60 years later — and despite an occasional reliance on matte shots that, depending on whom you ask, either a) remind viewers
of the film's
age or b) lend it a certain nostalgic
charm — it all still stands up as a highly entertaining and wonderfully suspenseful example
of a filmmaker taking obvious pleasure in toying with his
audience.
