Dead Rising: Endgame tries to take a more realistic tone compared to the first film, but in doing so, takes away
the charms of the first film.
The ending tries to recapture some of the sweet - natured
charm of the first film, but it rings hollow after all that has come before, and we feel bored as a result.
It does not have
the charm of the first film and it almost falls apart without seeing the first film.

the charm of the first film lay in its «good taste be damned» attitude!

In Tangled, the Walt Disney Company's new animated, feature - length, 3 - D adaptation
of «Rapunzel,» critic Armond White finds, sadly, that the story
of the girl with the very long locks not only «has been amped up from the morality tale told by the Brothers Grimm into a typically overactive Disney concoction
of cute humans, comic animals, and one - dimensional villains,» but also that the
film's «hyped - up story line... gives evidence that cultural standards have undergone a drastic change» in the decades since Walt Disney
first set out to
charm both children and adults with his animated retellings
of fairy tales.
And yet, however considerable the
film's
charms (it's
first - rate children's entertainment, to be sure), there's something just the slightest bit disappointing in how pro-forma it all feels: Ghibli geniuses Isao Takahata and Hayao Miyazaki never clung to a house style, making
films with wildly different looks and tones over the course
of their careers, whereas Yonebayashi's
first post-Ghibli effort colors well within the lines
of stock Japanese animation.
As
charming and gently agreeable as Kung Fu Panda 2 may be, screenwriters Jonathan Aibel and Glenn Berger, returning from the
first film, haven't really upped the ante like we expect a sequel to do — much
of what transpires here feels so comfortable as to be overwhelmingly familiar, as if you might have seen this movie before and let it slip your mind — until the very end, with its hint
of yet another sequel that has me highly intrigued.
John Cho, who drew my attention for the
first time when he appeared in «Harold & Kumar Go to White Castle» (2004), shows another side
of his talent here in this
film, and he has an unaffected onscreen chemistry with his co-star Haley Lu Richardson, who previously played a substantial supporting character in «The Edge
of Seventeen» (2016) and will probably advance further considering her
charming presence on the screen.
