By design, it's a psychological thriller masquerading as a haunted house movie, and Flanagan wisely avoids
cheap jump scares in favor of letting the dread develop naturally.
There's only one remotely
cheap jump scare in the movie, because the real scares of the movie come in the fact that you don't know what's going to happen.

With so many teen thrillers taking the route of bad, sensationalist horror, it's nice to see a standard suspense vehicle come out once
in a while, with better characterizations and fright earned through putting characters
in potential jeopardy, rather than just
cheap jump -
scares and shrill music.
If the film is anything like the trailer, it could be
in trouble because it's entirely full of
cheap jump scares.
A massive improvement over its bland predecessor
in just about every way, «Ouija: Origin of Evil» focuses more on creating a creepy atmosphere rather than the usual gore or
cheap jump scares, and it works pretty well for the most part.
There are no creepy clowns under the bed or
in the storm drains, and there is an absence of
cheap jump -
scares (OK, there is one that is the director's prank on the audience).
While elements of these films aren't always 100 % original, they are executed and placed
in such a way that gives a much needed breath of fresh air to a dusty and tired formula that is for some reason composed mostly of
cheap jump scares and bad acting.
A Quiet Place is a superb exercise
in understated terror that puts to shame «horror» films that rely on
jump scares and
cheap theatrics.
Annihilation delights
in surprises — not
cheap thrills and
jump scares but effective turns that have narrative or character intent — they're much more satisfying
in the long run.
Instead, it's a fairly tame genre flick that is sorely lacking
in atmosphere or frights of any kind save for a few
cheap jump scares early on.
The game also isn't really that scary (though thankfully it doesn't resort to using
cheap jump -
scares), but overall this outing has taken the franchise a step
in the right direction.
In a sea of horror games that treat mental illness as the vehicle for a
cheap jump scare, games like The Town of Light and the recent Hellblade: Senua's Sacrifice are a breath of fresh air.
Each step to modernize the game has taken away one of those clunky barriers that made the games legitimately frightening
in the first place, diluting the formula until all that was left was the occasional
cheap jump -
scare.
While other horror games are relying on
cheap jump scares and loud noises to send you pulling the headset off
in a cold sweat, The Brookhaven Experiment is legitimately terrifying.
