In addition to learning how to use a Gas Chromatography / Mass Spectrometer (GCMS) for separation and product characterization, my students will do literature searches about possible
chemical synthesis routes.

While conventional carbonaceous catalysts have amorphous carbonaceous structures that cause a decline in catalytic activities, the new
synthesis route enables the formation of carbonaceous catalysts with controlled
chemical structures like organic - based catalysts (Fig. 1b).
The researchers propose
synthesis routes for the two
chemicals that suggest the fungi produce them from a third, previously known pigment.

All in all, the conventional
route is a complex
chemical synthesis.
