I provide information, products and services to assist women and their partners
in having a positive pregnancy and
childbirth experience,
in hospital or at home.
After working as a
childbirth educator and attending a couple hundred births (as a doula — labor assistant)
in birth centers, homes and
hospitals, I've come to believe that the overwhelming majority of women intuitively gravitate to which location, type of support and «methodology» is best for themselves and their unborn babies to achieve a safe passage through the giving birth / delivering
experience.
From 1983 to 1992, I collected data on the pregnancy and
childbirth experiences of 100 middle and upper - middle class mainstream pregnant women and mothers, and on the health professionals (physicians, nurses, midwives,
childbirth educators) who care for them, through observation and interviews
in hospitals, offices, and homes.
And as the vice-director of Human Rights
in Childbirth, I work to establish women's fundamental right to make decisions about their bodies and babies, a right that I've always been quick to say must reach beyond courtrooms and
hospitals into our daily conversations and
experiences.
