This can be changed by having multi member legislative districts with
ranked choice voting so that voters can make meaningful choices among a broad range of candidates.
If any of these voters cast a second
choice vote for either of the two candidates still in the race then these votes are added to their piles.
If nobody gets more than 50 % then all but the two leading candidates are eliminated and the
second choice votes are then counted.
Indeed, in its most basic original form, it is formulated as a first past the post with an either or
choice voting system, although the principle can be generalized more broadly.
The system, also known as
ranked choice voting, would make the city's elections more democratic by encouraging candidates to reach out to more voters, supporters argue.
Most opportunities for unusual results occur when there are options which collect significant
