Although PARL is not obligated to assist our state's Animal Control facilities, we
choose to
open our doors and provide services and
resources to stray animals and the people that find them.
An
open adoptions policy should be coupled with: 1) active help from staff or experienced volunteers in
choosing an animal that is a good fit; 2) counseling (both orally and in handouts) at the time of adoption about training methods, how to introduce a new animal to strangers and other pets and where to go if problems arise; and 3) follow up calls to every adopter to answer questions and offer
resources.
So if you're an under - funded, understaffed,
open - admission municipal shelter overwhelmed with the throngs of unwanted pets your community continually dumps at your doorstep (as opposed to limited or closed admission shelters that can pick and
choose the animals they take in), and you have no additional
