Emancipation from the endless discussions of committee meetings, trying to solve problems in both religious and political communities that had hitherto occupied so much of my time, was a desirable freedom from
the chores of a democratic society; but it also meant an emancipation from responsibility — a doubtful boon, because responsibility engages us in the causes of moral, political and religious movements.
