chunks of continent that could not (and still can't) support intense agriculture out of the equation.
Some extremely old
chunks of continent do exist, however.
There are many ironies: Germany, which so frightened Europe for nearly a century, as it had in late Roman times, is now being beseeched virtually to take economic suzerainty over
chunks of the continent where the physical German occupiers in bygone days were violently unwelcome.
