Ilo Ilo is the feature debut of Singaporean director Anthony Chen, which this week sees its release after a lengthy festival tour during which, amongst many other prestigious awards, it picked up the Camera d'Or 2013, the coveted
cinematography prize at Cannes.
But Cartel Land, which tellingly won both the director and
cinematography prizes at Sundance earlier this year, combines both qualities to devastating effect, like real life framed as a breathlessly paced thriller.

Marking the return of «The Maid» director Sebastian Silva (who won the dramatic jury
prize at the festival in 2009, and who also helmed «Crystal Fairy»), it seems to be a heady and picturesque sort of psychological thriller which, with
cinematography by Wong Kar - Wai «s legendary DoP Christopher Doyle, should look pretty stunning.
«Birdman» — a visually inventive look
at a washed - up movie actor seeking redemption on the Broadway stage — took best picture, director,
cinematography and original screenplay
prizes at the Dolby Theatre ceremony.
There was more Irish success
at the festival when Robbie Ryan received the best
cinematography prize for his work on Andrea Arnold's Wuthering Heights.
Matt Heineman's Cartel Land, which looks
at both sides of a Mexican - American border zone where drugs and guns are driving vigilantes to take matters into their own hands, drew two awards from our jury, a best director award for the filmmaker and a best
cinematography prize for Heineman and Matt Porwoll.
Heineman, who won Sundance
prizes for directing and
cinematography, often served as solo camera operator, getting shot
at and witnessing torture.
Its long list of awards includes the nod for its gorgeous
cinematography at Tribeca, Audience and Grand Jury
prizes at AFI Fest and of course, the Ariel for Best Picture and all other major categories in its home country.
Daughters of the Dust bowed
at Sundance in 1991 and lit up the festival, winning best
cinematography for Jafa and ending up a finalist for the Grand Jury
prize.
