The role of
city region food systems in resilience and sustainable development (2015)
A group of organisations, including the UN FAO, the International Sustainability Unit - Prince of Wales Charity Foundation, the CFS - Civil Society Mechanism, Communitas Coalition, Global Food Security Cluster - Urban working group, ICLEI — Local Governments for Sustainability, RUAF Foundation, IUFN, UCLG, ILO, IFAD, UNCD and Habitat International Coalition jointly organised at the World Urban Forum a session on
city region food systems.
It provides lessons learned on the institutionalisation of
city region food policies and programmes; provisioning of national and legal frameworks embedding
city region food systems in broader legislation, on strengthening of coordination and collaboration across horizontal and vertical government levels, and on design of specific programmes and policies for sustainable
city region food systems.

This publication documents thirteen case studies from city regions around the world which are developing
City Region Food System (CRFS) projects, programmes, and policies, including those related to the prevention, reduction and management of food waste.
The two overarching questions addressed in this study are: 1) How can the private sector help shape more sustainable
city region food systems?
and 2) What business and policy environment is needed to better engage the private sector in building sustainable
city region food systems?
In the framework of the Cities Farming for the Future programme and the From Seed to Table programme RUAF supported strategic multi-stakeholder planning of local and national urban agriculture policies and programmes for the development of urban agriculture and
city region food systems in 18 cities of 12 countries in the global South.
Over the past years, the RUAF Foundation and its partners have collected and analysed relevant policy and strategic documents dealing with urban and
city region food systems and - more specifically - urban agriculture production, processing and marketing.
