For the last month, my three U.S. history
classes have been teaming up to
tackle school - and
community - wide challenges that matter to them.
Between
classes, they read textbooks, watch videos, collaborate with instructors and other students in our online
community, and
tackle sets of difficult problems.
Challenge 20/20 is an Internet - based program that pairs
classes at any grade level (K - 12) from schools in the U.S. with their counterpart
classes in schools in other countries; together the teams (of two or three schools)
tackle real global problems to find solutions that can be implemented at the local level and in their own
communities.
Joining forces with writers and intellectuals, these men and women — who came together at the progressive John Reed Club, founded in New York City directly after the crash — were dedicated to creating work that
tackled a range of socially conscious themes, including
class struggle, labor organizing, immigration, socialist mysticism, utopian
communities, racial justice, and the Spanish Civil War, among others.
BU Law's Brenda Hernandez, Associate Director for Diversity & Inclusion, wrote me that Critical Conversations invites participation from students, faculty, and staff and has
tackled difficult and complex subjects such as Privilege, Faith and the Law; Ableism — Perspectives from the Deaf
Community;
Class and Puerto Rican identity.
