redemptions tend to be in economy
class vs business and offer low rates to places
like Hawaii, Central and South America, and even Europe at costs less than many of their partner airlines included Alaska or Delta.
I'd rather store them elsewhere where I can get better value on my
redemptions — or even earn points with a transferable currency
like Citi, Chase, or American Express» reward programs, so I can transfer them to any carrier where I can get a fantastic first or business
class award.
While redeeming Avios for a business
class seat may be a decent value (
like our Boston - Dublin and Auckland - Sydney examples), in general, the best value of the BAEC program is in short trip
redemptions.
While not a traffic stopping offer, if you have been looking to do something
like a Mint (Business

redemption, this offer could easily save you many thousands of points.
Deals
like Europe to the Middle East for $ 1,538.50 and the US to Tokyo for $ 2,172 are exceptionally good value when booked on airlines of the caliber of Etihad and JAL (even after you factor in taxes and fees) and even some of the American Airlines
redemptions don't look too bad considering the good Business
Class seats the airline offers.
And the increases here are nothing
like we've seen in cases involving some of the other top first
class cabins
like Alaska's overnight nuking / devaluation of Emirates awards, which drastically altered possibilities for aspirational
redemptions.
So if a Skymile can't be used for major
redemptions like, for example, 160,000 Skymiles for a business
class ticket to Australia «worth» $ 10,000, what good are they?

Aeroplan is great because you can book one way awards, avoid fuel surcharges on airlines
like United and Singapore Airlines, they have one of the best search engines (although it can be a bit slow), and a lot of their
redemption rates for business
class are pretty reasonable.
Some people prefer making value
redemptions to maximize on luxury (
like spending miles travelling business
class), while others simply want to increase their travel frequency and reduce out of pocket expenses.

If you have a specific and more valuable
redemption in mind (
like Lufthansa first
class) and don't have a need for a bunch of Marriott Rewards points, it could make sense to take advantage of this discount, especially the fourth and fifth options.
Travelers used to be able to get some very nice
redemptions on partner airlines (
like Cathay Pacific First
Class to Asia for just 62,500 miles or Etihad Business
Class from Europe to the Middle East for just 30,000 miles) but those all went away when American overtly devalued the AAdvantage program in March this year (announced this time last year).
This means that there can be some great value to be had if you select the right
redemption options —
like Cathay Pacific in Business or First
Class between Europe and Asia (not a hard award to find), LAN Business
Class from the US to South American and Korean Air Business
Class between the US and Asia.
Discounts on offer this season include 25 % off business
class flights between Boston and Europe; 20 % off economy
class redemptions within Europe to cities
like Luxembourg, Milan, and Prague; and 25 % off business
class redemptions between Europe and cities in China including Beijing, Chengdu, and Xiamen.
Also, if you're interested in business
class or first
class award
redemptions, you're going to have to spend much, much more on your Capital One Venture card than on a card
like the Chase Sapphire Preferred to earn anywhere near the miles needed for those
redemptions.
Now, yes, my findings ignore certain variables
like the freedom (no pun intended) to do what you want with your cash and what not, but this article is geared towards travelers that likely have their eyes set on travel
redemptions, particularly with high - end business and first
class suites.
For example, business
class redemptions from places
like Chicago to Madrid are cheaper when using Iberia versus British Airways.
And after competitors
like American Airlines raised their
redemption prices for business and first
class awards (just one example), Alaska's program looks
like a relative bargain.

Even with flexible currencies, you'll often have
redemptions worth closer to 2 - 3 cents per point unless you're doing nothing but traveling internationally in business
class (and I agree there are some people
like that, but not most people).
A business
class redemption to Europe through major carriers is more than 100,000 miles, and I feel
like earning the same number of points with equivalent spending on the Chase Sapphire Reserve or hotel points has gone much further for us, personally.
If you're thinking about spending some time in the UK or beyond next summer (and you'd
like to fly business
class), you could do a lot worse — this is a pretty solid
redemption on a very nice plane.
Air Canada / Aeroplan, All Nippon Airways, and even American Airlines could be among the best SPG
redemptions because of award sweet spots,
like a round - the - world business
class award booking with All Nippon Airways.
But if you have a short term
redemption in mind where you could redeem lots of miles (
like for travel in first & business
class on Cathay Pacific, Japan Airlines, Etihad, Qatar, etc.), this represents a great value.

like 30,000 - mile economy awards between select cities in the US and Europe, and that its award chart is not the best deal overall, but there are some interesting

class awards for 35,000 / 50,000 miles respectively, and business
