schools were fully staffed with
librarians, guidance counselors, full - time reading specialists, art, music and physical education specialists, program implementers, technology teachers, paraprofessionals, special education teachers, nurses, social workers, psychologists, speech pathologists, and classroom teachers with small
classes that allowed them to provide plenty of individual attention to children.

At each rally, community members, parents, students and teachers called for smaller
class sizes, more counselors,
librarians and nurses, a fair teacher evaluation system, a true democratic voice for parents and students, and safe and clean
schools.
We are here to say it is not acceptable for the wealthiest country in the world to be cutting millions of dollars from
schools serving our neediest students; to be cutting teachers by the tens of thousands, to be eliminating art, music, PE, counselors, nurses,
librarians, and libraries (where they weren't already gone, as in California); to be increasing
class sizes to 40 or 50 in Los Angeles and Detroit.
The leadership role that
school librarians or SLMS can take to tie all the
classes and subjects together is a wonderful asset.

school friends, including a woman from my first grade
class who's now an East Meadow
librarian.

school library programs led by a certified
school librarian help ALL students do better in
school, including students whose parents can't afford to provide all the resources kids need to do well in
school: «[Research] tells us that even after adjusting for factors such as parental education, father's occupation, and social
class, the impact of having books available in the home is as strong a predictor of
school success as socioeconomic status.»
Back in my days as an elementary
school librarian, I read David Wiesner's books to all of my
classes, regardless of age.
