ATLAS is a library of authentic
video cases showing National Board Certified Teachers at work in the
classroom.
If preservice teachers were to view only the
classroom videos that are part of this
case study, they would not be privy to the changes and decisions the teachers made as a result of prior experiences gained from teaching the lesson in similar situations.
In addition, to facilitate the use of these materials, the
case includes an issues matrix with links to
video clips and text organized around three sets of issues — mathematics concepts and connections, teacher decision making, and
classroom management.
A multimedia
case study can allow preservice teachers to observe and understand these tensions by hearing the teacher's reflections on the lessons, as well as seeing teacher decisions in action during the
classroom video segments.
Therefore, a graduate assistant was instructed to excerpt 1 - to 2 - minute
video segments that seemed to represent units of activity, but without regard to the
video clip showing examples of particular teacher or student behaviors (in this
case,
classroom management and student questioning).
In our specific
case, one of the authors had previously developed and effectively used live - action
video vignettes as instructional resources in teacher education courses on
classroom management strategies (Smith, 1987).
Although written
cases and analyses of student work samples would achieve similar goals as
video analyses, images of
classroom lessons provide unique opportunities for novice teachers to see in action how more experienced colleagues make space for student thinking to become visible, probe student thinking to move learning forward, engage students in
classroom discourse and learn about students» individual ideas while they teach.
Each one contains a definition of the skill, with an accompanying slide show, technology - enhanced teaching strategies, and
case studies of
classroom instruction, short
videos, supporting research, and related resources.
More than two dozen teachers contributed to the book, which includes
case studies and
classroom videos of the practices in action.
The activity focused student attention on the overview of the lesson provided by the teacher, the
classroom video segments dealing with the lesson implementation, and the teacher's reflection regarding the effectiveness of the particular teaching strategy exemplified in the
video case (particularly, his discussion of how he used technology within the lesson).
In our teacher education classes, we designed this particular
video case activity to focus learners» attention on several critical components of the teaching strategy and, specifically, on how the technology used by the teacher facilitated the successful implementation of the strategy in his
classroom.
The wise practice
video case database was designed and developed to exemplify PBI activities in order to assist preservice teachers in understanding and incorporating similar pedagogies in their future
classrooms.
