At
night, when skies are
clear and the
temperature drops, warm air rises up the slopes while cold air is pushed down the hillside into the valley below.

On a
clear dry
night, however, the ground
temperature quickly inverts (becomes cooler than the bulk of the air immediately overhead) and radiation becomes far more important than convection.
On
clear still
night in a desert another effect occurs which is significant,
night temperature inversion.
When I first studied engineering heat transfer in the 1970s, the texts said to use for the
clear night sky an «effective blackbody
temperature of about -20 C (253K).
Thus it is easy to see why there is such a difference in
temperature between a
clear night and a cloudy
night in the winter.
This is why gardeners will put water vapor in the air and water liquid on the ground around their garden on a
clear cold
night — it protects the local area from cooling as fast because water vapor and liquid both 1) cool much slower than dry air due to their massive heat capacity, and 2) cool even slower because they release their massive latent heat, which means that heat energy is released from them without requiring a drop in
temperature — once they're in the latent heat release phase, they just keep shedding energy without dropping in
temperature any further.
On nearly windless
nights, when the sky is
clear and humidity is low, the
temperature will drop to the dew point which, if that dew point is below freezing, will lead to bad and / or expensive things happening and absolutely zero sleep being had for thousands of growers.
Apart from
temperature inversions, another occasion when hills can be warmer than valleys is during
clear nights with little wind, particularly in winter.
Last
night with a
clear sky I measured a
temperature of -27 C.
This method of cooling benefits from the low humidity,
clear night skies, and rapid drop in ambient
temperature that are common to this area (SW Montana), and would be less effective in areas with higher
night temperatures, high humidity, high winds, and cloudier skis.
The general observation that the
temperature is warmer on cloudy winter
nights than on
clear nights is attributed to the fact that low clouds emit more DLR than
clear sky.
