Part one is a report by Julia Kumari Drapkin on
the climate communication efforts of Colorado's State Climatologist, Nolan Doesken.
But let's play devil's advocate: say an intense
climate communications effort convinces the rich world that we are already far too wealthy for our own good and should happily begin a substantial reduction in our incomes and GDP.
In response to this reality, an intense and robust
climate communications effort may indeed help by incrementally increasing the public's tolerance for higher energy prices in the name of climate mitigation.

I confess that I have become somewhat blasé about the range of exciting — I think revolutionary is probably more accurate — technologies that we are rolling out today: our work in genomics and its translation into varieties that are reaching poor farmers today; our innovative integration of long — term and multilocation trials with crop models and modern IT and
communications technology to reach farmers in ways we never even imagined five years ago; our vision to create a C4 rice and see to it that Golden Rice reaches poor and hungry children; maintaining productivity gains in the face of dynamic pests and pathogens; understanding the nature of the rice grain and what makes for good quality; our many
efforts to change the way rice is grown to meet the challenges of changing rural economies, changing societies, and a changing
climate; and, our extraordinary array of partnerships that has placed us at the forefront of the CGIAR change process through the Global Rice Science Partnership.
In the press release and
communication efforts around the second report released early this year, the IPCC went to considerable lengths to portray the
climate change challenge as one of «risk management».
Yet, many long - running volunteer
efforts did not originate with the specific purpose of understanding the consequences of global
climate change, and as a result, most of these projects were not designed to foster
communication of scientific findings back to project participants; this is particularly true for studies using data from online repositories.
But along with the preening admiration bestowed on Taylor from many of those most stridently rejecting
climate science or any
effort to manage
climate risks, he also won the very begrudging respect of those mainstream
climate scientists and policy advocates who, while admiring his
communications savvy and stage presence, trashed what they dismissed as his pseudo-science proclamations.
Our schools launched a wide range of
efforts to improve classroom
climate,
communication, and teacher - student relationships, and within a couple of years, this had the happy side effect of a 50 % reduction in discretionary suspensions and a 37 % reduction in suspensions overall, including a significant reduction in racial and ethnic disparities (St. George, 2014).

The bulk of

After my post the other day looking at a Norwegian
effort to use a man walking a leashed dog to illustrate the difference between trend and variation, I got in touch with Olson afresh, both to get his reaction to that animation and talk more generally about ways to get beyond what he calls «the nerd loop» in
climate communication.

I've just started reading Boykoff's

climate communication and so is not a book I feel comfortable directly reviewing.
The work certainly supports criticisms of
communication efforts such as the video shown at the opening ceremonies in
climate talks in Copenhagen last year:
Despite substantial introspection and external analysis since 2007, the United Nations
climate panel has seemed persistently locked in an antiquated view of how to improve its
communication efforts, largely oblivious to the «new
communication climate» out there.
I agree with her that there is plenty to debate, both on the science in tough areas like attribution and
climate sensitivity and on what mix of incentives, investments, policies,
communication efforts and other actions can build a more durable human relationship with the
climate system.
One thing is certain: there is, at last, an organized learning
effort going on to improve
climate science
communication.

However, grassroots and NGO
efforts to establish voluntary greenhouse gas registries for Chinese businesses and organizations (similar to the
Climate Registry in the U.S.) could pave the way for eventual regional or national registries that could ground - truth information the Chinese government provides in its national

[Footnote 2] The
Climate Change Science Program Office, where I worked, supports this research
effort by performing interagency coordination, strategic planning,
communications, and reporting functions, and serving as the program secretariat.
The essential idea is not to replicate the 2000 National Assessment in its particulars, but rather to move forward with a strong, updated, coordinated, integrative
effort, employing the method of having
climate scientists and other experts communicate directly with policymakers and other stakeholders, geographical region - by - region, and socioeconomic sector - by - sector, to diagnose vulnerabilities and develop response strategies, without political interference with free and open
communication.
It took very little
effort at all to realize that a lot of what passes as «official» or even «unofficial»
communication from the
climate establishment wasn't even thin, it was see - thru.
By bridging the
communications gap between scientists, decision makers, and the public, this information can supplement local and state
efforts to address the changing
climate.
As Chapter 1 discusses in detail, environmental groups as mostly 501C3 organizations were allowed to spend unlimited sums on public education which includes advertising and
communication efforts advocating generally for a need for action on
climate change or a general cap on emissions.
This approach leads to an emphasis on addressing
climate change by changing individual behavior via financial incentives or disincentives or through various
communications efforts aimed at promoting lifestyle changes that reduce carbon emissions.
There is also a growing body of literature which suggests that the aggressive
efforts by
climate deniers have adversely affected the
communication and direction of
climate research (Brysse, Oreskes, O'Reilly, & Oppenheimer, 2013; Freudenburg & Muselli, 2010; Lewandowsky, Oreskes, Risbey, Newell, & Smithson, 2013), and allegations of defamation have led to the re-examination of one of the first author's papers to eliminate legal risks that is ongoing at the time of this writing (Lewandowsky, Cook, et al., 2013).
He is the recipient of the inaugural AGU

Taking a neutral stance at this point on rehashed work from «NIPCC» (Fred Singer and friends), well known for serial, serious errors in overall interpretation, analysis and
communication of the science and transparent but largely unexamined ideological bias at play in their playground «reports» — never mind suggesting that this kind of
effort «competes» with the work of the world's
climate scientists and the 2,500 multidisciplinary specialists contributing to IPCC reports combined with the tens of thousands of additional scientists and many others who raise real questions that result from reading, reviewing, evaluating and evolving the information in both IPCC summaries and domestic science and discussion of the science, knowledgeably and in good faith and with open identification of the nature of the social and political issues — is just not credible.
Alex Epstein speaks to the Canadian Association of Petroleum Producers (CAPP) in an
effort to help Canadian fossil fuel companies reframe
climate - related
communications tactics to the public.
In a lame
effort to fill out the TRNN video with other material which looked like fossil fuel industry orchestrating things, a line from the American Petroleum Institute's 1998 leaked «Global
Climate Science Communications Team» memo was highlighted, while the narrator read it: «Victory will be achieved when average citizens understand uncertainties in climate science.

... The coordinated tactics of the
climate denial network, Brulle's report states, «span a wide range of activities, including political lobbying, contributions to political candidates, and a large number of

Despite that goal — and recent

Climate Communication and Engagement
Efforts: The Landscape of Approaches and Strategies
Anthony Leiserowitz, director of the Yale Project on
Climate Change
Communication, attributes this decline to five factors: The economic collapse, a severe decrease in media coverage, weather events like «Snowmaggedon,» the
efforts of the «denial industry» (the network of industry - funded think tanks and political advocacy groups that push skeptic views), and the «ClimateGate» debacle.
While I commend everyone's
efforts, locally and nationally, I still see a breakdown of
communication between the left and the right as the biggest problem toward achieving a
climate solution.
