DOE presents a good distillation of the Administration's general approach to science and technology: a particular skepticism of federal technology
programs and hostility to
climate research; a general interest
in scaling back even fundamental science; and a desire to increase investment
in defense - related activities.
In particular, NOAA's
climate research program remains well below FY 2009 levels (Figure 5).

According to a 2013 study of California farmers, factors like exposure to extreme weather events and perceived changes
in water availability made farmers more likely to believe
in climate change, while negative experiences with environmental policies can make farmers less likely to believe that
climate change is occurring, said Meredith Niles, a postdoctoral
research fellow at Harvard's Sustainability Science
Program and lead author of the study.
Using the genomic technologies he's learned at the IGB, Woolbright hopes to develop a

in species interactions at the gene level.
In addition to its basic
research mission, the
program aims to improve the region's ability to weather
climate change.
In her contribution to this feature, frequent Science Careers contributor Siri Carpenter describes how new
programs are emerging to help scientists prepare for the increasingly interdisciplinary nature of
climate change
research while also ensuring a solid disciplinary grounding.
«President Obama has once again marginalized America's preeminence
in human spaceflight, as well as the American taxpayer, for the benefit of his
climate research programs,» said Representative Pete Olson of Texas when Obama released his proposed NASA budget earlier this year.
The NOAA cuts, at least as they are initially laid out by the administration, would be devastating to the agency's scientific
research across multiple areas, said Erika Spanger - Siegfried, a senior analyst
in the
climate and energy
program at the Union for Concerned Scientists.
But a number of federal
research programs and projects remain
in Trump's cross hairs, including five of NASA's Earth science missions and various
research, including on
climate or environmental science, at the EPA, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration and the U.S. Geological Survey.
The occasion was the release of a report from the U.S. Global Change
Research Program titled Global
Climate Change Impacts
in the United States.
The problem is that, on the federal level, «there's no
research program at all
in a coordinated way,» panelist Ken Caldeira, a
climate scientist at Stanford University
in Palo Alto, California, told ScienceInsider.
«These results help resolve a divergence
in climate trends of the past 2,000 years recorded
in marine sediments of the North Atlantic Ocean, compared with those recorded
in fossil pollen from the continents of North America and Europe,» says Jonathan Wynn,
program director
in NSF's Division of Earth Sciences, which co-funded a portion of the
research with NSF's Division of Environmental Biology.
The Trump administration's fiscal 2018 budget proposal, which Congress must approve, would sharply reduce and
in some cases eliminate funding for science
programs at the Environmental Protection Agency,
climate - related science
research programs at NASA and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration and cut
in half
research and development
programs at the Energy Department.
Holdren called on scientists and engineers to dedicate 10 % of their time educating policymakers and the public on issues such as
climate change, protecting the world's oceans and public lands, continuing Arctic
research and demonstrating the importance of investing
in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM)
programs for elementary and middle school students.
«There are a lot of people
in those
programs worried about
climate and energy
research.

For example, a large body of
research has found switching to an entirely vegetarian diet would make a huge difference on the carbon footprint of our food system — the
Climate Change, Agriculture and Food Security
research program reports that if the global population were to reduce or cut its meat intake, it would halve the cost of mitigation actions needed to stabilize carbon dioxide levels to 450 parts per million by midcentury — but for many people that is not
in the cards.
«Our findings clearly demonstrate that if future protected area expansion continues
in a «business - as - usual» fashion, threatened species coverage will increase only marginally,» said Associate Professor James Watson, WCS's

Program Director and a Principle
Research Fellow at the University of Queensland, and senior author on the study.

The current presidential administration
in the US has proposed to almost completely eliminate funding for
programs aimed at
researching and reducing the effects of
climate change.
The
research conducted by Bartos and Chester
in this area has been supported by a grant from the National Science Foundation's Water, Sustainability and
Climate program.
A little - known grant
program that supports academic
research to help communities adapt to
climate change and manage their coastal and lakeshore resources is on the chopping block
in the Trump administration's budget proposal for the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA).
Understanding how much society values those future people should be an influential component of
climate policy decisions,» said Noah Scovronick, co-lead author and a postdoctoral
research associate at Princeton University's
Program in Science, Technology, and Environmental Policy (STEP), which is based at the Woodrow Wilson School of Public and International Affairs.
The Obama administration emphasized advanced computing and materials for energy
in the basic energy sciences»
program, and biofuels
in the environmental
research program; House of Representatives Republicans have tried repeatedly to cut
climate research within that
program.
One noteworthy semi-surprise: NASA's Earth Science
program, a major
climate research funder and a target for Congressional Republicans, is funded
in the request at $ 1.8 billion.
Research programs on Chemical Safety and Sustainability, Safe and Sustainable Water Resources, Homeland Security, and Air,
Climate, and Energy would all be flat - funded
in FY 2016.
