Moving beyond simple
observations of the negative outcomes associated with depressive symptoms in pregnancy and the postpartum
period requires information about 2 related phenomena: 1) the identification of distinct subgroups of women in terms of onset and persistence of depressive symptoms, and 2) the identification of demographic and
clinical correlates of these subgroups to aid in the development of more refined models of mechanisms linking depressive symptoms to behavioral and physical health outcomes.
