close reading instruction look like in your classroom?
Recently, I read the book Turning the Page on Complex Texts: Differentiated Scaffolds for
Close Reading Instruction by Diane Lapp, Barbara Moss, Maria C. Grant, and Kelly Johnson.
By learning different approaches to
close reading instruction I am better equipped to help my students closely read complex texts successfully.
This last summer I researched different strategies for creating close reading lessons and found the book, Turning the Page on Complex Texts: Differentiated Scaffolds for
Close Reading Instruction by Diane Lapp, Barbara Moss, Maria Grant and Kelly Johnson, to be an invaluable resource.
I've been following the close reading approach established by Diane Lapp, Barbara Moss, Maria Grant, and Kelly Johnson, who «literally» wrote the book on close reading (Turning the Page on Complex Texts: Differentiated Scaffolds for
Close Reading Instruction).
Not exact matches
As I
read Rabbi Shaul's / Paul's
instructions, in the letter to the church in Rome, about how to live out life, I see him encouraging believers to provoke others, especially the Jewish people we encounter, to envy — to live a life that challenges them to desire a
closer walk with the Lord, to live a life of more faithful obedience to His Word.
With increased
instruction in academic language, and increased attention to understanding of morphology and connectives, Lesaux hopes to
close the gap between students»
reading skills and their comprehension.
If
close reading becomes de facto
reading instruction — if it becomes just another iteration of the knowledge - free, mind - numbing skills - and - strategies approach of the past several decades — it will be fatal not just to Common Core, but to
reading itself.
But complaints about it bother me less than its potential overuse, or the creeping notion that
close reading is what all
reading instruction should look like under Common Core.

The
close reading activities kit includes an
instruction sheet for teachers, four
close reading activity sheets, and a compare and contrast graphic organizer.
It should be followed by extensive
reading, including
close reading of different text structures; cooperative learning for further development of skills in communication, collaboration, critical thinking, and creativity; and content - based writing with
instruction in revising and editing strategies.
I believe the best
