In the last few years it has made even less given the rapid fall of oil, coal, and natural gas prices, which have made «green energy» even less economically competitive with fossil fuels than it already was.
Consumption of fossil fuels (coal, oil and natural gas) fell by 5.5 % in 2009 compared to the previous year.
The argument that other things kill birds and bats, and that fossil carbon is bad, falls to the ground like a Peregrine Falcon at Ivanpah Solar with its wings burnt, when you ask how effective wind turbines have been in putting coal mines and gas pipelines, and sounding for oil in the Arctic, out of business.
The ratio of energy returned on energy invested (EROEI) for fossil energy production has tended to fall as high - quality deposits of oil, coal, and natural gas are depleted, and as society relies more on unconventional oil and gas that require more energy for extraction, and on coal that is more deeply buried or that is of lower energy content.
There's no question falling oil prices have played a big role in recent value declines, but as climate policy gathers momentum and new technologies, such as solar and energy storage, continue their trend of becoming more affordable and ubiquitous the medium - and long - term outlook, especially for coal and oil, looks grim.
But that would mean you can show the falling per unit profits for those poor oil and coal companies.
In this fabulous table from Our World in Data, you can see again how in the UK, the cost of lighting was pretty stable from the 1500s to the 1800s at an incredible 15,000 pounds per million lumen - hours; then it drops as coal oil lamps take over, and then falls to the floor with the development of the electric lightbulb.
1Coal combustion emits almost twice as much carbon dioxide per unit of energy as does the combustion of natural gas, whereas the amount from crude oil combustion falls between coal and natural gas, according to Energy Information Administration, Emissions of Greenhouse Gases in the United States 1985 - 1990, DOE / EIA -0573 (Washington, DC, September 1993), p. 16.
Burning more oil and gas, but less coal, saw the US's emissions fall 2.6 % in 2015 and they are projected to fall a further 1.7 % in 2016.
