The company plans to reduce the share of
coal - powered
generation by half, to 16 percent of its power
output, by 2030.
Even without the environmental drive, new railways from mines to ports, falling investment in
coal - fired
generation and slowing power demand growth could see China's miners export some of their surplus
output at competitive prices, hitting regional miners and the viability of new projects.
Build before Memory Runs Out Although individual consumer actions can help, major changes in carbon
output will likely require better electricity -
generation technologies, retiring much of the
coal - fired capacity and replacing it with the most cost - effective combination of modern reactors, renewables and even clean
coal.
In 2017, renewable
generation in the UK was three times higher than the
output of
coal power stations.
Wind
generation capacity already is on par with
coal - fired power
output in Texas, due to a proliferation of wind projects at the same time
coal plants are closing.
First, to replace 1 kW of
coal generation, almost 3 kW of wind
generation will be needed, because wind turbines run at 30 %
output on average as compared with about 88 % for a new
coal plant.
Already, the impact of reduced demand, growing renewables, and rooftop solar, is causing a decline in
output in
coal generation, bringing capacity factors down sharply, particularly for black
coal generators.
What gets bad is when we are not allowed to run base load
coal plants efficiently, and when we have to cycle them up and down to chase wind
generation's variable
output.
Figure 1 (Left): Example of a
coal combustion power plant («Actual Generator
Output») poorly following the grid operator's automatic
generation control («AGC Command»).
The take up rate would stop the natural increase in electricity
generation required for increasing numbers of dwellings and in several years their would be a decline in electricity
output from the
coal fired power stations to equal or match that required by industry and commerce.
Even so, hydropower
output would have had to grow by almost 40 % if it were to have displaced the increase in
coal - fired power
generation, an unrealistic prospect regardless of the weather.
The gas
generation plants were needed to supplement low
output from wind and solar
generation and shuttered
coal plants.
