If your dog doesn't have any problems with
cobalamin malabsorption or there is no vitamin B12 deficiency, you can give oral supplements available in 100 -, 250 -, 500 -, 1000 -, and 5000 - microgram tablets.
Beagles, Border Collies, and Giant Schnauzers are particularly susceptible to
cobalamin malabsorption.

Uncorrected
cobalamin deficiency may lead to villous atrophy, intestinal inflammation and worsening
malabsorption, with resultant failure to respond to pancreatic enzymes alone.
Malabsorption of fat soluble vitamins and
cobalamin, and changes in the number and composition of the small intestinal bacterial flora have also been documented in dogs with EPI and may contribute to their clinical condition (Williams et al 1987; Westermarck et al 1993b; Adamama - Moraitou et al 2002).
Malabsorption of
cobalamin can occur from a combination of decreased availability of pancreatic intrinsic factor and pancreatic proteases necessary to release
cobalamin from R proteins, coupled with overgrowth of
cobalamin binding intestinal bacteria.
Treatment may also include supplemental
cobalamin (B12) injections that help reestablish friendly bacteria colonies, which in turn helps inhibit the
malabsorption.
