Many researchers now believe that real advances in genomics will come not from simple X-causes-Y correlations but from a rich statistical understanding that emerges out of the
sequences of millions of genomes — a set that reveals how our genetic
code is
likely to interact with the environment to make us who we are.
To identify genetic changes
likely to be responsible for the giraffe's unique characteristics, including sprints that can reach 37 miles per hour (60 km / h), Cavener and Agaba compared the gene -
coding sequences of the giraffe and the okapi to more than forty other mammals including the cow, sheep, goat, camel, and human.
Although the researchers found no change in the
coding region of the gene, they did find that autistic children were much more
likely to have inherited a shortened form of the genes promoter — the DNA
sequence that serves as the on ramp for the cellular machinery that will express the gene.
In other cases alternative transcripts have introns interrupting the
coding sequence, resulting in a truncated ORF that is
likely to encode a non-functional receptor.
