The goal, in the end, would be to steer the embryo down the path it would have gone if it were something like a very
early coelurosaur, a dinosaur grouping that counts tyrannosaurs and velociraptors among its members.
Those
bigger coelurosaurs included the tyrannosaurs (starring, yes, the king of them all, T. rex).
«
Coelurosaurs started out as the small critters running around the feet of the sauropods, fearing for their lives,» Persons says.

I find this entire uproar strikingly similar to the long - running argument about dinosaur antecedants; particularly the Clemson view of dinosaurs as descended from the «cursorial crocs» as opposed to pretty much everyone else's view (now) that birds derive
from coelurosaurs.
