In addition to a marine biologist's typical tools — water samplers to measure salinity and temperature, plankton nets — the team's toolbox will hold cameras, coring systems to
collect seafloor sediment, and hydroacoustic equipment to map the topography of the now - exposed seabed.
Working in remote conditions, researchers in the winter of 2012 ran a drill through 450 meters of ice and 500 meters of ocean to
collect seafloor sediments on either side of this lost bulwark.

The purpose was to create a bathymetric picture of the sea bottom and to
collect reflection seismic data, which allows researchers to peer into the
sediments and rocks underneath the
seafloor.
To untangle the impacts that these three climate stressors will have on
seafloor diversity in the future, the researchers examined existing published data and
collected new data on organisms living in deep - sea
sediments in upwelling regions along continental margins, where the ocean and continental crusts meet along the
seafloor.
Dr. Edwards took deep
sediment core samples to further understand the geology of the region including the unusual
seafloor mound where these samples were
collected.
They suspended conical «
sediment traps» above the
seafloor to
collect and measure the amount of marine snow falling through the water.
The new core samples were extracted from roughly 506 to 1,335 meters below the
seafloor, and Lowery and his colleagues focused on
sediment collected from roughly 617 meters below the
seafloor, corresponding to material laid down immediately after the asteroid impact.
