The couple started out in the early 1960s, as soon as they could afford it, collecting mostly American contemporary painting and sculpture — Mark Rothko, Isamu Noguchi, Louise Nevelson — and then, in an unusual but passionate adjunct, pre-Columbian work.

This major project will consolidate Yorkshire's reputation as the best place to see contemporary and modern sculpture, building on the region's unique, unrivalled history - as the birthplace of Barbara Hepworth and Henry Moore - and commitment to collecting, commissioning, exhibiting, studying and promoting sculpture.

During the last 50 years it collected 400 paintings and sculptures and 5000 prints by contemporary artists.

Also included are works by Lonnie Holley and Ronald Lockett, artists whose work the High has been collecting since the 1990s, joined by sculpture from their Alabama contemporaries Joe Minter and Richard Dial.

Wells recalled that moving to the Scilly Isles, where Relief Construction was made, in 1936 prompted his immersion in contemporary artistic ideas: «I was very isolated there», he wrote, «and collected and read everything I could about Abstract and Constructive movements as well as painting and sculpture in general» (letter to Tate Gallery, 18 December 1973).
