The case
of Till has long animated
exhibitions centered on representations
of black subjects and persists as an image that reminds us
of collective work that remains to be done.
Until November 4, the Edge Gallery in Bath is hosting an
exhibition of the groundbreaking work
of the Turner Prize winning
collective Assemble, who have staged a show along with the artist Simon Terrill.
Naturally, the international exposure
of his work, widely exhibited in galleries and institutions such as Galerie Jeanroch Dard (Paris / Brussels), Rod Barton Gallery (London), Berthold Pott (Cologne) and in
collective exhibitions at the Musée Musée Départemental du Sel (Marsal), Centre Georges Pompidou (Paris), BWA (Wroclaw) and Autocenter (Berlin) is considered, but also his role as a curator in several projects.
The
exhibition incorporates a broad definition
of the term «alternative space,» and includes significant publications and artist
collectives to cover a broad arc
of this history — bridging neighborhoods, decades and themes.
The
collective set up its own space, Hafriyat - Karaköy, in 2006, holding
exhibitions and gatherings, and hosting other artists and
collectives who deal with similar issues — many
of whom I mention below.
