Liz Nielsen is a New York based photographic artist who continues to work in the analog
color darkroom.
Artist Statement: The analog
color darkroom is a magical place where a pitch - black environment allows only the vision of the minds eye.
In 1958 he became
a color darkroom technician and manager at a large commercial color photography lab.
Made in an analogue
color darkroom, and build up from multiple exposures on light sensitive paper, the prints combine projected Photoshop files of digitized brush strokes with traditional photogram techniques where objects are placed directly on the image surface.

While he loved the allure of large format photography and the mystical appearance of images in a traditional
darkroom, his «discovery of
color» via his first digital camera led him to challenge himself to see beyond the natural landscape he had become comfortable with and to explore a new environment, the urban landscape, and seek out

This volume includes, amongst other series, selections from «Diary / Landscape,» in which Welling matched the writing of his ancestors» letters with Connecticut winter landscapes; «Glass House» a meditation on Philip Johnson's 1949 residence, shot using
colored filters; examples from his «Degrades,» pure
color photograms created in the
darkroom as well as selections from his recent «Wyeth» and «Choreograph» track his early interest in painting and dance.
The print output varies from 19th century and traditional
darkroom processes to digital inkjet and
color chemical prints.
Richter's stark, lovely and somewhat eerily tinted photographs are reminiscent of stained canvas in abstract
color field paintings, which have a fresh narrative viewpoint; in this instance, flowers that may have been influenced by early
darkroom experiments by Man Ray.
Later, using
darkroom techniques, she introduced
color and created photocollages, which were then re-photographed to produce a unified
color transparency.
Since 2000, he has been creating abstract photographs in which he beams
colored light on photoreceptive paper in the
darkroom, absorbing contaminating dirt and mechanical glitches into what are essentially experiments in a chemistry lab.
After later spending a few years as the overnight shift printer for
Color Edge in Chelsea, Buckley finally ended up processing work and problem solving
darkroom challenges for artist Adam Fuss.
