The contrast

Cornish writes: «I like how dramatic the paintings are as
images, and how this drama pushes and pulls (surges may be a better word) in two directions: the ruffs and ripples
of canvas and
colour work upwards towards the containing outline, whilst the outline imposes itself on the action it frames: cutting, nipping, tucking and cropping.»
Amorphous shapes, sharp - edged logos, scything blocks
of colour and silky veils
of tinted varnish intrude into Stubbs» picture planes, fragmenting the surface; it is as though the physicality
of the
works are coming up against the pixilation
of the flattened, immaterial space
of the digital
image.
In order to make this body
of «camera-less»
work, Ruff adopted obscure
images of Japanese anime and digitally manipulated their neon
colours and forms to produce phantasmagoric abstractions detached from the original
image.
John has
worked extensively in oil on canvas as well as watercolour and collage, harnessing what he calls «the forces
of rhythm, structure and
colour» through improvisation «to make
images of power and poetry».
While they are called paintings, these wall - mounted
works are composed
of layers
of laser - cut birch wood ply and MDF, milled, perforated and painted so that evocations —
of colour, form and
image — seem to shift and dissolve as the viewer moves in front
of them.
The Adventures
of a Photographer comprises
works from the last twelve years: dreamlike landscapes, cityscapes and industrial nightscapes saturated with intense
colour along with carefully executed black and white
images of people and interiors such as her renowned portraits
of Indian upper - middle - class families and her latest project File Room.
The title
of this exhibition comes from Thompson's painting Yesterday and Tomorrow; characteristic
of Thompson's brightly
coloured, fluidly painted
works, this
image of a lion facing a row
of statues encapsulates the joy and spirit
of this exciting artist's practice.
His
work frequently combines elements
of the everyday with the fantastic, all rendered in psychedelic
colours, giving his
images a disorienting and surreal feel.

When fellow students who had been on courses at Newcastle — where Tom Hudson, Harry Thubron, Victor Pasmore and Richard Hamilton were among their mentors — began to explain the evolution
of Mondrian's
work to me, the metamorphosis
of his drawings
of trees, for instance, towards making an autonomous painting, or Matisse
working directly from the nude model but ending with an independent
image — then it seemed an exciting possibility, to make a painting that was independent
of local
colour or illustrative form.
He
works from photographs and drawings, creating collage - like compositions, and then experiments with different ways
of drawing out the aspects that interest him — whether highlighting the surface detail or distant object, or by painting a version
of the
image as a blocked - out negative
of flat
colour.
And what is so remarkable is that the very loss at its core — a portrait is a person here, but not here — is countered by the slow lyricism
of the
work: Gorky's mother is brought back from annihilation, held in the bounding contours and gentle
colour, her momentary
image indelibly fused with the painting's hard - won surface.
As
images blend into one another, and the aesthetic connection to
colour allows intuition to take over, the
work suggest the possibility that our emotions can resist the culture
of publicity and reshape notions
of progress.
In her painted
works, Magill delicately imposes layer after layer
of colour until the
image takes on an ageless quality, as though coming to us from a distant past.
In contrast to his previous
work, where contemporary elements act as incisions into conventional frameworks, here the planes
of colour lie on the surface
of the paintings as colder adaptations to the underlying
image.
Muniz's Metachrome
works are exceptionally rich in allusion - they challenge the issue
of materiality by leaving the medium (pastel sticks) literally embedded in the
work; and the resulting photographs become not just
images of something, but
works about paint, about creating art and about
colour itself.
Curry's
work always contains this constant osmosis between the warmth
of material like natural wood and the artificial slickness
of industrial
colours, between the memory
of a hand - made object and the mass - produced, reproduced, broadcast
image, between tribal art and the world
of consumption.
Edited by Skira and curated by Bruno Corà, the monograph will contain
colour images of all the
works on display, together with an extensive selection
of photographic documents, critical commentary and source material, all
of which illustrate Gianfranco Pardi's long and fertile creative career.
Inspired by the crude
images of Minoan frescoes as well as by the bright, hard
colour and sharp outlines he found on Crete, Caulfield incorporated a decorative, more playful feel into his own
work.
This new body
of work, created especially for the exhibition, features a series
of found photographs altered with his trademark blocks
of rich
colour, accompanied by banal snippets
of text that appear like captions beneath the
images.

Laura West is an artist from New York — who is part Russian, part Armenian — who explores bright
colours, dark
images and uses this emotional release to dictate the route
of her
work.
Primarily
working from life, he produces
images in which line and form are expressed through carefully composed strokes and planes
of flat
colour.
It is during this transitional period in the mid - to late -»60s that Bowling's seminal body
of work, the Map Paintings — a series
of quasi-abstract
colour fields overlaid with stencilled
images of maps
of Australia, South America and Africa — was produced.
Beautifully designed, with over 100

The National Portrait Gallery exhibition, with about 100

images, to well - known as well as previously unseen
works in

of video.

That Kline repeatedly chose to
work from the photographic
image indicates that despite his academic training, which included drawing from a live model, he preferred to
work from a medium that artificially, or a priori, flattened and circumscribed reality within a frame and drained it
of colour.
Scott creates
works that explore the
colour, texture and sensation
of the
image environment that consumes daily life while using a myriad
of everyday materials such as nail varnish, make - up, tin foil and felt that reflect on the superficiality
of this experience.
Within her digital
images, sculptural pieces and installation
works Scott references numerous aesthetic styles from the history
of decorative arts and design including as Post-Impressionism,
Colour Field painting, postmodern décor and present - day pop iconography.
The paintings combine imagery sourced from the internet with archival material from old books and magazines in order to visualise a world in which nothing is stable or certain, echoing the tectonic cracks appearing in the old world order.A number
of new
works contain abstract elements, richly
coloured striations, which are derived from found
images of cracked plasma screens.
For some, he made pairs
of works by blotting compositions with clean paper, creating a mirror
image that Shapiro then obfuscates by adding new
colours or changing the orientation
of the paper.

Unlike Lord's earlier
work — like the Angry Bird Paintings series or Documental exhibition at Dem Passwords — that painstakingly translates digital
images to canvas, this new approach for Safeworld is «devoid
of traditional painting methods;
of perspective, vanishing point,
