The other day we were cleaning
out the
pantry and
came across a bag full
of printed recipes from cooking classes we have taken in the past.
One
of DL's new contributors, Elana Amsterdam, who blogs at Elana's
Pantry (look for her gluten - and dairy - free dinners in our upcoming Oct issue), just
came out with an excellent cookbook, The Gluten - Free Almond Flour Cookbook, available in stores July 28 (or preorder on Amazon or Powells).
There were some minor changes in the recipe, mostly due to limitations
of my
pantry: we do not have frozen apple juice concentrate here so I just finely grated some apples and added a pinch
of sugar, let it sit for a few minutes to give the juice time to
come out; o) I also used fresh apple juice instead
of the water and didn't have any nuts on hand (silly me forgot to check and realized the were all gone when I as in the middle
of baking) so I just crumbled some Italian nut cookies on top
of all.
I cracked in a couple
of eggs to make it more
of a hearty breakfast meal, and sprinkled a little sumac (my favorite spice in my
pantry) on top, and
out came a breakfast that was destined to be a new favorite
of mine.
Taking a cue from a pizza combo I love — caramelized onions, figs, and goat cheese — I sought
out to make an appetizer that could
come together with
pantry ingredients the afternoon before guests arrived or even a few days before in anticipation
of their arrival.

out - them basics that usually don't cost much but can make a meal appear
out of nowhere.

Now that I've shared our idea for moving the kitchen to the dining room, and our plan for moving the dining area to the original kitchen, plus the vision for the «butler's
pantry» in the adjoining hall, today I thought we could
come full circle and I could show you how all
of these spaces are laid
out and relate to each other.
After the busyness
of summertime... with our
comings and goings and hosting lots and lots
of company, my
pantry really got
out of control.
I was frustrated until I finally
came up with the idea to move the contents
of this coat closet
out to the garage and extend the closet to make a double door
pantry.
