drama, action, and romance they were aiming for.
It's the thing that's
missing so often when there's a
drama or even a
comedy about music.
Next week we get Ruby Sparks (very good, unexpected, non-traditional romantic
comedy), Killer Joe (William Friedkin's grotty NC - 17 thriller, starring Matthew McConaughey), Ai Weiwei: Never Sorry (documentary about the Chinese activist, said to be very inspiring), The Graduate (45th anniversary engagement of Mike Nichols» classic), Farewell My Queen (French period
drama, said to be quite good), plus the wide releases of the Total Recall (possibly only for junk food fanatics, but who knows yet), so it's a good weekend to catch up on any holdovers you might have
missed.

The film tries at time to be a
comedy, a romance and a
drama, but
misses on all three fronts, and ultimately left me scratching my head at what I just saw.
Writer / Director Ian Power wears the film's Spielberg heart on its sleeve, in particular the very strong E.T. - vibe (
missing father figure, crash landing outsider, construction of something to help him return home), and the strong cast help bring the
drama and
comedy when and where it's needed.
«War Dogs» could be the subject of a documentary, one which Michael Moore could do a job with, but prospers as a
comedy -
drama from direction by Todd Phillips, well - known to mostly youthful movie fans for «Hangover» (three buddies at a bachelor party try to locate a
missing bachelor in time for the wedding).
In sticking with tradition, Fraser followed his latest hits with
misses: Inkheart fell way short of expectations, the true
drama Extraordinary Measures co-starring Harrison Ford launched CBS films on a lackluster note, and the forest - saving family
comedy Furry Vengeance was even too bad for the Razzies to single out.
Though politics is always crooked, there are some genuinely good things in Our Brand Is Crisis, the new film from David Gordon Green, a director who, with films as varied as Pineapple Express and Joe, has demonstrated a remarkable ability to shift between absurdist
comedy and gritty
drama with nary a beat
missed.
Hit - and -
miss that surprisingly achieves its good moments through flashes of
drama amid the rather mediocre
comedy pieces.
