As someone who found the romantic
comedy ending of Love's inaugural season disingenuous, I was pleased to see the how this year's premiere wrecked the happiness of that moment.

If we engage in the «de-mythologizing»
of the Revelation to St. John the Divine, as we must also «de-mythologize» the creation stories in the book Genesis in the Old Testament, we realize that what is being said is that as human existence and the world in which that existence is set has its origin in the circumambient, everlasting, faithful
Love that is nothing other than God — we recall Wesley's hymn, quoted a few paragraphs back, that «his nature and his Name is
Love», and Dante's great closing line in The Divine
Comedy about «the
Love that moves the sun and the other stars» — so also the «
end» toward which all creaturely existence moves is that very same
Love.
If you don't remember, each
of Shakespeare's
comedies end happily with marriage, all except for one:
Love's Labour's Lost.
The film, which hits theaters February 16, is a modern twist on a romantic
comedy (boy and girl meet, fall in
love, but then break up, and are suddenly reunited,
ending up in that awkward stage where they have to debate whether to wave hello while taking out the trash), but it's also a particularly female spin on the coming
of age story, the likes
of which we're only beginning to see onscreen as more women carve out a place for themselves in writer's rooms and director's chairs.
[146] She traveled to San Francisco and began dating a lot, using Internet dating services and apps, and sometimes going to singles» bars alone, only to find that the «romantic -
comedy concept
of love» with a «perfect, permanent, tea - for - two
ending» was not going to happen to her.
When Eigenberg's Sex and the City run
ended with the wrap - up
of that series (at the
end of the 2003 - 2004 season), he continued his cinematic work, first voicing Nermal the Cat in the FX - extravaganza Garfield: The Movie, then playing Reggie, the lover
of Alicia Goranson's Myra, in Adrienne Weiss» quirky indie romantic
comedy Love, Ludlow.
Add a Phil Collins -
loving Mike Tyson (still packing a fierce right hook), taser - happy school children and a photomontage
of the «lost night» that rolls over the
end credits, and The Hangover amounts to a gut - bustingly funny boy's own
comedy.
Films that might have fit this putative strand included the charming but overlong Timeless Stories, co-written and directed by Vasilis Raisis (and winner
of the Michael Cacoyannis Award for Best Greek Film), a story that follows a couple (played by different actors at different stages
of the characters» lives) across the temporal loop
of their will - they, won't - they relationship from childhood to middle age and back again — essentially Julio Medem - lite, or Looper rewritten by Richard Curtis; Michalis Giagkounidis's 4 Days, where the young antiheroine watches reruns
of Friends, works in an underpatronized café, freaks out her hairy stalker by coming on to him, takes photographs and molests invalids as a means
of staving off millennial ennui, and causes ripples in the temporal fold, but the film is as dead as she is, so you hardly notice; Bob Byington's Infinity Baby, which may be a «science - fiction
comedy» about a company providing foster parents with infants who never grow up, but is essentially the same kind
of lame, unambitious, conformist indie
comedy that has characterized U.S. independent cinema for way too long — static, meticulously framed shots in pretentious black and white, amoral yet supposedly lovable characters played deadpan by the usual suspects (Kieran Culkin, Nick Offerman, Megan Mullally, Kevin Corrigan), reciting apparently nihilistic but essentially soft - center dialogue, jangly indie music at the
end, and a pretty good, if belated, Dick Cheney joke; and Petter Lennstrand's loveably lo - fi Up in the Sky, shown in the Youth Screen section, about a young girl abandoned by overworked parents at a sinister recycling plant, who is reluctantly adopted by a reconstituted family
of misfits and marginalized (mostly puppets) who are secretly building a rocket — it's for anyone who has ever
loved the Tintin moon adventures, books with resourceful heroines, narratives with oddball gangs, and the legendary episode
of Angel where David Boreanaz turned into a Muppet.
The
comedy here leans heavily toward the filthy
end of the spectrum, but once you get past the sex
comedy and dirty language (and be in no hurry to do so) there's actually a very sweet story about a man trying to find true
love while being told that casual sex is all that matters.

Richard Curtis»
Love Actually, which strikes me as the British counterpart to this film, played out as an ongoing series
of happy
endings, the kind every romantic
comedy eventually provides.
Way back in January, plenty
of laughs and joy arrived in the form
of Ass Backwards, a wacky
comedy from writers Casey Wilson («Happy
Endings») and June Diane Raphael («Burning
Love»), who also star in the film as a ditzy, clueless duo reminiscent
of Dumb & Dumber and Romy & Michele's High School Reunion.
It's a difficult film to describe, part drama about longterm
love (both platonic and romantic), part ensemble black
comedy, part agitprop about personal choice in matters
of the
end of life rather than machine - mandated life, and all parts delightful.
Hawn began her acting career playing the ditz on TV
comedies like Good Morning World and Laugh - In, but by the
end of the»60s, her bubble - headed persona became less a figure
of fun and more a
love - generation ideal.
Wright keeps things moving with whiz - bang in - camera tricks, action choreographed by Jackie Chan's longtime stunt coordinator, and pop music from [the main characters»] salad days... I think you can deduce from the foregoing that I pretty much unreservedly
loved «The World's
End,» whose compact dramatic structure and steady flow
of good jokes puts most mainstream American
comedies... to shame.»
Trends
of the Year: Sex addiction (Don Jon, Thanks for Sharing), shipwrecks (Gravity, All Is Lost), the skin trade (Lovelace, The Look
of Love), taking the White House hostage (Olympus Has Fallen, White House Down), the apocalypse as
comedy (This Is the
End, The World's
End), slow cartoon protagonists who nonetheless win the big race (Turbo, Planes), likable character actors who are revealed to be villains in the final reel (Star Trek Into Darkness, White House Down, The Lone Ranger)
Diaz succeeds in reasserting her sexiness through a variety
of hot - for - teacher mini-skirts and unbuttoned blouses, but by the
end of this foul - mouthed saga, her character isn't shocking so much as just someone looking for
love in the wrong place — specifically, a
comedy that's never as bad as it wants to be.
This is pretty much a generic romantic
comedy where the two would - be
love interests find themselves on opposite
ends of competing interests.

Love, Rosie (R for profanity and sexuality) Romantic
comedy, based on «Where Rainbows
End,» the best - seller by Cecelia Ahern about a couple
of lifelong BFFs (Lily Collins and Sam Claflin) who take forever to realize they were meant for each other.
«Identity Thief» should have been the final nail in the coffin
of America's
love affair with McCarthy, but if her irritating performance in «The Heat» doesn't put an
end to that reign, then the moviegoing public deserves more lowbrow
comedies just like it.
