film - maker willing to look past her skill for being sullen and gift her with a fascinating, disturbing, tragic character to inhabit.
After securing the 2013 Sundance Film Festival's Screenwriting award, a slot on the National Board of Review's top ten
list of indie
films, and the vocal support of critical heavy hitters like A.O. Scott, Lake Bell's pitch - perfectly precise
comedy In A World... announced itself as one of the more confident debut features in recent memory, let alone from an actor - turned - director / writer.
First, it means some great
films that are also
comedies may appear lower on the
list than they would if we were weighing technical execution of those non-comic elements equally with humor present.

It's the kind of lesser known
film you might find through the
film festival circuit (had it's premiere at Sundance
Film Festival) that's made up of a different brand of
comedy or drama than your used to from a typical blockbuster, strong performances from B or C -
list actors, and overall much to offer.
Other premieres on the
list include the latest from «What We Do in the Shadows» director Taika Waititi (a
comedy called «Hunt for the Wilderpeople,») the newest
film from «Love is Strange» director Ira Sachs («Little Men,») and the next directorial project from actor John Krasinski, «The Hollars.»
In addition to the
films that I've
listed here, the brothers are also responsible for other big
comedies like Kingpin (1995), Me, Myself and Irene (1998) and Hall Pass (2011).
The genius (yes, I'll break out the «G» word) behind
films like Kill
List, Sightseers, and High - Rise has been a favorite of mine for years, leaping between genres while maintaining his signature dark
comedy and unflinching ability to sell genuine pain and terror.
The Innkeepers Easily one of my favorite
films of last year (it even made my top ten
list), Ti West's take on the haunted house is equal parts well - played
comedy and atmospheric horror, and both parts work perfectly.

list, followed by Martin McDonagh's black
comedy Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri and the Gary Oldman - starring Churchill biopic Darkest Hour.
In its climax, the
film happily adds «violence against women» (albeit of the self - defense variety) to the
list of taboo subjects it tries to mine for
comedy.
Nevertheless, the
film has achieved enormous critical and commercial success (indeed, a psychological torture scene with fish, and Cleese caught with his pants down, are moments just over-the-top enough to remain unforgettable), and frequently finds itself on
lists of the greatest of all
comedies.

list, and this is a very funny
film.

«The To Do
List» may not be a
film of great substance, but this
comedy about a young girl's strange, semi-erotic journey from untouched maiden to minx accomplishes something both rare and significant for a teen movie: it places a female character in the central role as unapologetic sexual aggressor.
The winners
list for
film actors this year also included Brie Larson («Room») for Best Actress in a Motion Picture (Drama), Jennifer Lawrence («Joy») for Best Actress in a Motion Picture (
Comedy), and Kate Winslet («Steve Jobs») for Best Supporting Actress in a Motion Picture.
On a night where Ronan won Best Actress in a Motion Picture, Musical or
Comedy, and her
film won Best Picture, Musical or
Comedy, Gerwig was not
listed as one of the directing category's five (all - male) nominees.

film's charm is responsible for it rising to near the top of my
list of favorite romantic -
comedies of all - time (now, granted that's not a huge
list, but this is still a huge surprise given the material and my
film preferences).
