Unlike the similar apocalyptic claustrophobia of last year's 10 Cloverfield Lane, the tension in It
Comes at Night isn't based
on whether the threat is real (that's made clear in the opening
scene), but whether it can be kept
at bay and who might be bringing it home.
At 62, Mr. Neeson is still pretty convincing when it
comes to fighting, but running is becoming problematic: in one
scene, where he's being pursued
on foot by Forest Whitaker, you find yourself thinking here is a chase that could go nowhere very slowly.
Also, there's a
scene where Loomis finds the word SAMHAIN scrawled
on a chalkboard
at Michael's former school, so that implies some sort of connection to Halloween and why he has
come back, but it's only a vague implication.
